10 Not-So-Spooky Halloween Activities For Preschoolers

Halloween is a fun time for all! From baking cookies in the form of little creatures to dressing up as your favorite character or person, there is a ton of fun to be had. However, when planning activities and fun for preschool age children, too much scare can lead to tears, which is not at all what you are looking for on what is supposed to be a fun night.

If you are in need of some entertainment to keep the little ones busy, the following are 10 activities for you to try with your preschooler!

1. Decorating Pumpkins

Although carving pumpkins is what is normally done during the spooky season, trusting a child with a sharp tool can get scary quickly! However, that does not mean you have to refrain from these activities; opting for a safer version will save you the fear and allow the children to still have their fun.

What You Will Need

  • A couple different-sized paint brushes
  • A pumpkin
  • Stickers
  • Googly eyes
  • A few different paint color options

What To Do

Once you have all your materials, the next step is to simply have some fun! You can create faces with googly eyes or paint. Maybe you are super creative and come up with a new monster to make and display on your pumpkin. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination.

If you are running out of ideas, here are a couple you could look to for some inspiration:

  • A black cat
  • Spooky skeleton
  • Witch’s hat or broomstick
  • A monster of your own creation
  • Your favorite character from a movie or show

The last step for this activity is to display your pumpkins! Show them off to all friends and family, or put them outside for the neighborhood to enjoy.

2. Toilet Roll Castle

This activity takes a little bit of planning in advance, as you will need quite a few toilet paper rolls to make your castle.

What You Will Need

  • Different colored paints
  • Multiple toilet paper rolls
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Decorating items such as stickers or markers

What To Do

First, it may be easier to paint your toilet paper rolls before gluing, but it is up to you to decide.

After that, glue your toilet paper rolls into a castle-like shape. There is no right or wrong way to do this. Maybe your castle is as tall as possible, almost like a tower, or it could be flat and long. Whichever way you decide to build, your castle will be perfect.

Third and finally, it is time to decorate the castle with whatever supplies you have. Use markers to draw some fun shapes, or add some stickers all along the walls of the castle.

3. Coloring Sheets

This is a super easy activity to set up for kids and could be done while a Halloween movie is playing for extra fun.

What You Will Need

  • Coloring pencils
  • Markers
  • Coloring sheets

Get your preschooler to help you choose some Halloween-themed coloring sheets to print. Their input will add to the enjoyment of the activity. Perhaps consider playing a Halloween movie in the background for some extra fun and entertainment.

4. Paper Bats

Paper bats are a fun and easy way to get your home looking ready for Halloween.

What You Will Need

  • Colored paper
  • Glue
  • Scissors

What To Do

  • Cut long, thin strips out of the paper,
  • Taking a single strip, create a loop
  • Thread the second piece of paper through the loop and glue each end together
  • You should have two loops connected now
  • Keep making the loops with the remaining strips of paper you have
  • On the very last loop, create a little bat face using different colored paper
  • Once your bat is done, loop a ribbon through the top to hang somewhere in your home

The number of paper rings used for the bat can serve as a way to count down to Halloween by removing one each day until you are only left with the bat’s head.

5. Handprint Ghosts

Using air-dry clay or oven-bake clay, children can press their hands, creating a mold that they can then decorate with eyes and a spooky smile. Children will love these handprint ghosts!

What You Will Need

  • Air dry or bake clay
  • Different color paints
  • Paint brushes
  • Ribbon or string
  • Rolling pin

What To Do

  • Press your hand into the clay, enough to have the hand print stand out
  • Create a little hole in the top, big enough for a string or ribbon to go through

  • Once dry, paint the clay hand the look like a ghost
  • When done, put a string or ribbon through the hole created and hang them in your home
